Maghrebi Prayer -Jewish Liturgical Music from Northwest Africa
This music is the result of a unique collaboration: Muslim Arab musicians from Algeria accompany cantor Alain Chekroun as he performs Jewish liturgical music.
This CD is an exciting combination of classical Maghrebi Arab melodies (maalouf) and traditional kwish texts.
Some texts are based on those used on Jewish holidays and other festive occasions -such as the Sabbath or circumcision ceremonies - while others are taken directkj from the Bible.
Alain Chekroun, a cantor in the North African Jewish community, is the grandson of the Rabbi of the Great Synagogue of Constantine, Algeria. He is accompanied by top-rank Algerian musicians, in an ensemble led by Taoufik Bestandji who as grandson of one of Algeria's greatest musicians, is both heir to a long tradition of classical Arab music and representative of its new generation of performers.

Musique de la Bible révélée, La - Suzanne Haïk Vantoura
   Añadi/AddCesta/Basket
Une notation millénaire décyptée
A thousand year-old notation deciphered by Suzanne Haïk Vantoura

Where is the source?
The cradle of Western history, is that of the people of Israel also the cradle of all our music? The result of a long and painstaking ‘deciphering’ of the musical signs noted here and there in Biblical manuscripts, this recording attempts to answer this question and presents a number of certitudes: these chants ‘speak’ to us more directly than any archaeological documents.

1   Psaume 23 'L'Eternel est mon berger' (Anonymous)  2'08
2   Bénédiction sacerdotale (Nombres VI, 22)  1'56
3   Psaume 24 'A l'Eternel appartient la terre'  2'54
4   Cantique des Cantiques (I, 1)  1'36
5   Psaume 6  3'25
6   Lamentations (I, 1)  1'51
7   Psaume 133  1'35
8   'Ecoute, Israël' (Deutéronome VI, 4)  2'20
9   Psaume 150 'Alléluia !'  1'00
10   Elégie de David (II Samuel I, 19)  5'18
11   Psaume 122 'Je suis joyeux lorsqu'on me dit.'  1'44
12   Psaume 123 'Vers toi j'élève mes regards.'  2'08

The words you will be hearing on this recording are sung in Hebrew, a language evolved and first spoken in the Holy Land yet the music which at-cot accompanies these liturgical test is European through and trough, recalling the cultural ethos not of Palestine but of Venice and Mantea, Avignon and Aix.

André TAÏEB : chant l voice
Kamal BERRADA : oud, ney
Mohamed ZEFTARI : violin
Pierre-Luc BEN SOUSSAN
riqq, derbouka, daf

Music and singing have constantly been integrated into the way of life of the Jewish people in their exile imposed ever since their first and second temples were destroyed in Jerusalem. The Sephardic Jews, heirs to the tradition of Al- Andalus (Moorish Spain), and expelled from Spain in 1492, were to play an eminent rote in the cultural expansion of tire whole Mediterranean basin. Taïeb, cantor of the synagogue in Montpellier, was initiated into the art of the maluf from Constantine by the great master Shaykh Raymond, a major figure in Arab-Andalusian music from Eastern Algeria. André Taïeb delivers these songs in all their authenticity and original force, accompanied by the Naguila Ensemble..

From Rhythm Magazine
Rounder has begun to release the field recordings made by the late author/composer Paul Bowles during his many decades in Morocco. The cover photo of a group of men singing to oud and tambourine accompaniment implies the presence of instrumental music, but what one hears on this 2-CD set is strictly vocal-liturgical music and adaptations of popular songs. A Moroccan synagogue service is quite unlike the better-known European Jewish rites and makes for a fascinating comparison as to how prayers are approached and intoned. Nevertheless, this is ritual worship, not music as such, and it's of lesser appeal than the songs, which are performed informally and reflect the influence of popular Egyptian and Algerian styles.
